15 Years Of Bringing Free Press To Closed Societies

Radio Free Asia is a private, nonprofit corporation broadcasting and publishing online news, information, and commentary in nine East Asian languages to listeners who do not have access to full and free news media. RFA’s broadcasts seek to promote the rights of freedom of opinion and expression, including the freedom to “seek, receive, and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.” RFA is funded by an annual grant from the Broadcasting Board of Governors.

Our Mission

Radio Free Asia’s mission is to provide accurate and timely news and information to Asian countries whose governments prohibit access to a free press. Guided by the core principles of freedom of expression and opinion, RFA serves its listeners by providing information critical for informed decision-making.

Where We Broadcast

RFA President Libby Liu hugs the many RFA staff women on International Women's Day, 2007.

Radio Free Asia broadcasts to the People’s Republic of China (in Mandarin, Cantonese, Tibetan and Uyghur), Burma, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and North Korea. We also publish an English webpage to meet international demand. Click here to view a map of our broadcast region.

RFA Headquarters in Washington, DC is an all-digital facility. We have overseas offices in Hong Kong, China; Taipei, Taiwan; Bangkok, Thailand; Phnom Penh, Cambodia; Seoul, South Korea as well as stringer offices in Dharamsala and New Dehli, India and Ankara, Turkey.

RFA has approximately 270 full-time staff and more than 200 stringers and consultants in the United States and overseas.

On December 17, 2010 the Broadcasting Board of Governors passed this resolution celebrating and commemorating RFA’s 15 years of impact broadcasting.

This year, Radio Free Asia celebrates 15 years of bringing objective, accurate, and timely news to people in Asian countries that restrict free speech and free media.
While much has changed at RFA since we began in 1996, our mission has remained the same: to advance the principles of the fundamental right to the free-flow of information and the right to seek, receive, and impart information.
Please take a moment to explore this webpage where you can revisit important milestones, accomplishments, and moments from RFA’s early days to the present.
—Libby Liu, President of RFA
